Roof Leaking? Here's What to Do Right Now
A leaking roof is stressful, but the right first moves protect your home and your wallet.
The moment you spot water coming in, the clock starts. Acting quickly limits the damage. Hesitating, or doing the wrong thing, can turn a straightforward repair into something far more costly.
Immediate Steps to Take
Your first job is to contain the water before it spreads.
Catch the water. Place buckets, bowls, or any container you have under the drip. Lay old towels around the base to stop water tracking across the floor. If the ceiling is bulging, it may be holding pooled water. Carefully puncture the lowest point with a screwdriver to give it a controlled release, rather than letting it collapse on its own.
Move your belongings. Get furniture, electronics, and anything valuable out of the affected area. Water can travel a long way from where it first enters, so check the surrounding rooms too. Rugs and soft furnishings absorb moisture quickly and can develop mould within 24 to 48 hours.
Find the rough source. You do not need to identify the exact tile or joint. What helps is knowing roughly where on the roof the problem is. Go into your loft if it is safe to do so. Look for damp patches on the timbers, water stains on the insulation, or daylight showing through. Take a photo on your phone. This information is useful when you speak to a roofer and can help speed up the assessment.
Document everything. Photograph the water damage inside the property before you clean anything up. If you need to make an insurance claim, this evidence matters.
What Not to Do
Some instincts in a crisis are understandable but make things worse.
Do not climb onto the roof. A wet roof is dangerous. Tiles become slippery, and without the right equipment and training, a fall is a real risk. This applies in dry weather too, but in the rain it is especially hazardous. Leave the roof itself to a qualified roofer.
Do not ignore it. A small leak does not stay small. Water finds the path of least resistance, and that path tends to get wider over time. What starts as a damp patch on a ceiling can become rotted timbers, damaged insulation, and mould spreading through the structure. A repair carried out promptly is almost always cheaper than one left for weeks or months.
Do not attempt a botched fix. Expanding foam, roofing tape, and similar products are sometimes used in desperation. They rarely hold, and they can make a proper repair harder to carry out. A roofer arriving to fix a leak that has been covered in foam has to strip that back before they can even assess the problem. You end up paying for extra labour, and the underlying fault has been sitting there getting worse all along.
Do not assume it is minor. Leaks that appear during heavy rain can seem to stop once the weather clears. The source does not go away. It will return the next time water finds its way in, and often the next leak is worse than the first.
When to Call for an Emergency Repair
If water is actively entering your home, you need a roofer, not a wait-and-see approach.
Call as soon as the situation is contained enough for you to pick up the phone. You do not need to have identified the source, measured anything, or prepared a full description. A roofer who knows what they are doing will ask the right questions and take it from there.

That experience matters when someone is standing in their living room with water coming through the ceiling and needs a straight answer fast.
Our
roof repair services cover everything from a single slipped tile to more significant structural issues. If you want to understand more about how a roofer traces a leak back to its source, our guide on how to find a roof leak walks through the process in plain terms.
Not every leak is a full emergency. Some can wait a short time for a scheduled visit. But if water is coming in actively, if the volume is significant, or if you can see structural damage, treat it as urgent. The cost of a call-out is always less than the cost of water damage left to spread through your home.
A few other situations that warrant an immediate call:
Storm damage. High winds can lift or crack tiles, shift lead flashing, or damage the ridge. If a storm has passed through and you notice a new leak, the roof may have taken more damage than is visible from the ground.
Chimney leaks. Water running down inside a chimney breast is not always obvious until it has been happening for some time. If you notice damp patches on a chimney breast wall, especially after rain, that needs attention.
Flat roof failures.
Flat roofs can fail suddenly, particularly on older properties. If a flat roof section is letting water in, the felt or membrane may have split or lifted and will not improve on its own.
